Our Programs
Market Based Women and Youth Empowerment
KDII has a fully solar powered empowerment and innovation facilities in Turkana and Samburu that enables development of livelihood programs and business initiative such as practical and technical skills.
KDII partners with institutions to implement market-based programs that use indigenous knowledge such like leatherworks, beadwork, organic agricultural products and other hand crafts to market through KDII regional business network.
Our Activities Include:
- Production of neem, honey, shea butter based beauty and health products e.g. neem bath soap, neem health powder, Honey, and Shea butter cream.
- Textile, fashion and design using latest modern technology powered by solar.
- Leatherworks making durable products e,g, bags, sandals, belts
- Garment printing and embroidery training
- Bead works, and ornamental crafts
- Marketing and business development support, creating market linkages and empowered youth and women with skills for sustainable business development.
- Psycho- social behavior change programs and soft skills. KDII also empowers women in ASAL with market-based programs that use indigenous skills.
Menstrual Health Management
KDII aims to restore dignity in women and girl through innovative Menstrual hygiene management that address environmental challenges and provide sustainable solution to period poverty.
Our Activities Include:
- Production and distribution of KEBS-certified KDII reusable sanitary towels. While creating income for women and youth, KDII produces and distribute high-quality, to schools and communities. The pads are designed for superior absorbency, leak-proof protection, and all-day comfort.
- Education and Awareness creation on MHM. KDII partners with our key stakeholders in the MHM sector to raise awareness, advocacy and policy programs and community involvement. KDII works closely with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, county governments and other institutions.
- Donation and distribution outreaches in partnership with other institutions and organizations.
- Training of women and youth in production of reusable sanitary pads. Our production facilities at Turkana, Laikipia, Samburu and other arid regions trains local women on sewing and production of reusable pads after which they are employed at the facility creating economic empowerment and improves livelihoods.
Climate Resilience and Environmental Conservation (Waste to Cash)
KDII strengthens climate resilience in Turkana and West Pokot by empowering women through programs involving environmental conservation and circular economy solutions.
Despite low literacy levels, women and youth are equipped with employable skills, KDII enables them to establish businesses that enhance economic stability and reduce environmental impact.
Our Activities Include:
- Tree planting exercises of draught resistant trees and awareness creation of environment conservation
- Upcycling of used plastic marketing materials e.g. banners and gently used clothes from urban areas into income-generating products e.g. bags, hats and freshly designed clothes.
- Market linkages to ensure product reach markets beyond Arid regions and refugee camps.
